Today was FA Cup 3rd round day, a big day in the football calendar where all the big teams play their first game of the cup, sometimes against teams in much lower leagues in 'David and Goliath' style fixtures. It's an epic day for football fans, and I had an epic day. I'm watching highlights right now...
Anyway, whilst I watched this FA cup football today, and followed it all, I also went down to Salisbury to watch non-league football at it's finest. Salisbury are 1st in the 'Conference South' league, 116 league positions below Manchester United, the leaders of the Premier League.
The stands are quite different to those you see on TV, but the atmosphere is just as fantastic in it's own way. You get to hear so much more of the hilarious things people shout out, and get more of a sense of camaraderie in a place like The Ray Mac in Salisbury!
For me football is a great coming together of people, it always has been. I've never enjoyed football or sport in general as much sat alone. It's far far more enjoyable to watch with friends or family who are just as excited and up for it as me; whether they support the same team, opposite team or are just interested in watching a good game of football. This is the vibe I felt today at the Salisbury City match. Don't get me wrong, watching England win at Wembley Stadium is also brilliant, and the noise in a place like that is phenomenal as well.
The only sad thing is the bad press football gets for the few idiots that ruin it. And I don't blame the press. It upsets me, and all the football fans I know. Racism, violence and other such behaviour isn't acceptable in any form anywhere, and when it's happening at major teams football matches it feels like a regression back into a time where things racism that were the norm. Sad.
Earlier this week a player called Kevin Prince Boateng who plays for AC Milan decided not to take the racist abuse he was receiving, and left the pitch after receiving abuse. This has also happened to England U21's recently in Serbia.
My opinion is that anyone should be allowed to follow in his footsteps, in football or any other profession. No one should have to work under racist abuse anywhere in any job. Maybe that's a dream world situation.
Enough words about football.
I also like Formula 1...
...and Golf...
...and Rugby...
...and Tennis...
...all of the sports.
