Today I discovered a photo taken by a buddy of mine Jacob Cockle. An incredible photo which won The Guardian Travel Photo of the Year 2012 - http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/gallery/2013/jan/03/been-there-travel-photographer-2012#/?picture=401274122&index=10.
I find so many reasons to love this photo. Starting with the obvious there's the completely out-of-place nature of the huge tanker on the Indonesian beach. The surfer, a tiny figure in comparison just getting his surf on with no regard for the boat nearby. The comparison of these two figures in the frame is epic. I also really enjoy the colouring in this photo, the greys and browns setting a tone to match the abandoned, washed up boat. I'm a huge fan of off-centre, asymmetrical photography as well. I prefer things to be to one side as the boat is in this, creating tons of negative space in the frame.
To me this photo kind of says "Fuck it, do what you love, whenever and wherever you can". I'm not sure if that's what you wanted Jacob, but that's what you've said to me.
I'd love to conquer my fear of open water like this and the unknown that comes with it and give surfing a go. I have skateboarded since I was 11 or so, never amazing at tricks but love cruising round on a board of any size and would love to try surfing. Maybe next years resolution!
Thank you Jacob Cockle for making it very easy to find something to write about today.
Peace!
